A Basic Introduction to Chemistry: Definition, Branches, Physical properties of the four states of matter
How to define Chemistry?
The knowledge that humans have developed through observations and experimentation may be stated to as science. Due to its immense development and variety of subjects, science has been further divided into many branches. One of the most significant fields of science is chemistry. Chemistry is the study of the composition, structure, and properties of matter and the processes that matter undergoes. Since living and non-living things are made up of matter chemistry influences all aspects of life. There are Several branches of chemistry as mentioned below.
Branches of chemistry
1. Organic chemistry— Study of carbon-containing
compounds. (Petroleum, Plastics, biofuels, etc)
2. Inorganic chemistry— Study of organic substances
bonded to metals (organometallics, metal alloys, ion batteries, glass, etc)
3. Physical chemistry— Study of the properties and
changes of matter and their relation to energy (plasma TVs -
television display technology, energy production, etc)
4. Analytical chemistry— Identification of the
components and composition of materials (blood analysis, water analysis,
pollution testing, etc)
5. Biochemistry— Study of substances and processes
occurring in living things (Medical, pharmaceuticals, etc)
6. Theoretical chemistry— Use of mathematics and
computers to understand the principles of chemical behavior and to design and
predict the properties of new compounds (docking, DFT studies)
State of matter
There are four fundamental states of matter namely solid, liquid, gas and plasma. The state of a substance may be changed by adding or removing heat energy from it. For instance, the addition of heat can melt ice into liquid water and turn that water into steam.
